Since mid-August, this driver has shipped with every beta release of Big Sur. After four weeks of testing all supported RAID levels, we sent the driver to Apple for inclusion in the macOS Installer for Big Sur. We started testing this new version of the driver on Intel Macs when the first beta Big Sur was released. The final release of the SoftRAID version 6 driver has been tested extensively and is already shipping. The Final Release of the SoftRAID Version 6 Driver Is Already Shipping We will continue to fix bugs in the application and refine the user interface before shipping the final release of SoftRAID version 6 in the coming months. We know this beta release is reliable as the driver has already passed through our test program and is a final release version. Rather than preventing users from upgrading to Big Sur, we decided to open the beta release of SoftRAID version 6 to everyone. Why is SoftRAID version 6 still in beta? We have several additional features we want to add to the SoftRAID application. SoftRAID Version 6 Beta Release Supports Big Sur We know that your important files rely on this piece of software, which is why we spend so much time testing and perfecting it. It gets called to perform every single read and write to a SoftRAID volume – often more than 10,000 times a second. It is running whenever you have a SoftRAID volume attached to your Mac. The SoftRAID driver is really the critical piece that makes a SoftRAID volume so fast and reliable. It just receives notices from the driver and puts up dialogs, and writes entries to the SoftRAID log whenever anything important happens. It is always running in the background but isn’t required for your SoftRAID volumes to work. Like the sign, it tells you when things are slowing down, or there is a problem you should deal with. The SoftRAID Monitor is like the traffic sign at the side of the freeway that tells you about traffic conditions. It doesn’t have to be running for you to use a SoftRAID volume and is usually only used a few times a month. The SoftRAID application is used for setting up SoftRAID volumes and investigating problems. And my apologies to anyone who may have purchased a Caldigit on my recommendation.SoftRAID is made up of three key parts: the application, the monitor, and the driver. This really begs the question, what’s going on with Caldigit? All I know is that I can no longer recommend any of their products. SoftRAID works with OWC RAIDs, Drobo, ORICO and many other third party RAIDs. SoftRAID has figured this out with SoftRAID Pro and SoftRAID Lite (for Intel+M1 Macs). So why hasn’t CalDigit been able to figure this in in the past 10 months? They claim that it’s too difficult to write the drivers for the Caldigit T4 RAID on an M1 Mac. You have just lost a customer.ĬalDigit – I understand your frustration in this matter and am sorry that we are not able to come to an immediate solution for you here today.ĬalDigit – We’ll be sure to let you know of any changes regarding the T4 RAID and M1 Macs LrG – Had I known this I would never recommended this purchase. LrG – So, we’re stuck with a doorstop from Caldigit.ĬalDigit – The T4 RAID will still work on Intel-based Mac systems, but not on the newer M1 hardware As of now, the only way to use the T4 RAID is on Intel-based Mac systems. I regret that we are unable to do so, noĬalDigit – The M1 Mac systems do not support the T4’s drivers and attempts to circumvent the hurdles of the new M1 macs are proved unsuccessful. Since you cannot support the M1 Mac, will you refund my investment?ĬalDigit – The hardware changes made with the M1 mac systems make driver/software changes extremely difficult, especially for legacy hardware. What good does the T4 do backing up a computer I do not use. In order to use the T4, you will need to connect it to an Intel-based Mac system.ĬalDigit – In order to access the T4 on any level whatsoever, you will need to connect the T4 to an Intel-based Mac system We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes. Thank you.ĬalDigit – I regret to say that we do not currently have viable drivers that will allow use of the T4 RAID on any M1 Mac system. We need your help getting the RAID up and Running. The Drive Utility appears to “see” the T4 but it doesn’t mount. Lightroom Guy (LrG) – Hello, I’m working with my client to get his Caldigit T4 RAID TB3 up and running on a 2021 M1 iMac. Here’s the condensed transcript from the online chat with CalDigit tech support: The Caldigit T4 RAID TB3 we’ve been using as a backup on his 2017 iMac would not mount on his new M1 iMac. I was working with a client recently with whom I had recommended a Caldigit T4 RAID Thunderbolt 3. I usually avoid making disparaging comments regarding products, but today, I discovered that Caldigit RAIDs are not supported on M1 Macs. I now regret recommending CalDigit to my clients
